Djerba

About Djerba

This picturesque island just off the coast of Tunisia is a haven for sun worshippers thanks to its beautiful coastline and sea views. It’s the ideal spot for those looking for a lazy beach holiday, although the island breeze makes it ideal for activities such as windsurfing or kitesurfing. Those who prefer to stick to dry land can take part in some quad biking or horse riding amidst the sand dunes. Or you can ride a camel in Djerba’s hot desert landscape and sleep under the stars in a Bedouin camp.
According to legend, this was the land of the lotus eaters visited by Odysseus, and the island’s enduringly idyllic setting contributes to its relaxing atmosphere. Djerba’s capital, Houmt Souk, means ‘market area’, and the souks that line the streets are a great place to enjoy a spot of arts and crafts shopping. It’s a town of whitewashed Moorish buildings, flower-draped cobbled squares and winding lanes filled with antique shops selling rugs, ceramics, and jewellery - many of which have been created according to local Berber traditions. Head to the Marché Central to see spices piled high at the fruit and vegetable market. The Libyan market (Rue Taïeb Mehiri) takes place every week, selling cheap clothes and other western goods.
Tunisian food has a host of flavours that resonate with historic influences, including those of the Phoenician, Roman, Arab, Turkish, and French invaders, as well as the native Berbers. Many dishes are based around couscous and incorporate chilli, olive oil, celery, red peppers, onions, and garlic as well as harissa, the fiery chilli condiment.
Visit in July and August and you might witness the colourful dance celebration which takes place as part of the island’s Ulysses festival to commemorate the legend‘s arrival to the island and features international folk-dance troupes as well as Arab and Tunisian artists. August is also time for Pop in Djerba, a six-day cultural and music festival featuring pop, rock, electro, punk, and poetry, with gigs by local and international artists on two stages, one of which is on the beach.
